Cancer Focus

Tumor suppressor genes, targeted therapy, and tumor cell intrinsic functions

Research Interest

My research interests have included a focus on how genetic variants of p53 that exist in African Americans affect tumor suppressor function and response to therapy. Specifically, I plan to elucidate the role p53 variants have on tumor suppression and cancer risk. This will be accomplished by utilizing genetically engineered mouse models (GEMMs) of p53 to develop novel therapeutic strategies in a manner that is directly influenced by TP53 genotype. A second area of interest in my laboratory is the heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) and to generate novel inhibitors of HSP70 for the treatment of gastrointestinal cancers.
