Elucidating the role of inflammation and inflammatory mediators in the progression of colon cancer

Research Interest

My research is focused on understanding the molecular, genetic, and cellular bases for normal and neoplastic intestinal biology. As part of this focus, my laboratory is interested in understanding how inflammation and inflammatory mediators contribute to colorectal carcinogenesis. Our earlier work uncovered a previously unrecognized role of pro-inflammatory PGE2 in promoting colorectal cancer (CRC) initiation, growth, and metastasis. We showed, for the first time, that PGE2 promoted CRC formation, growth, and metastasis by silencing certain tumor suppressor and DNA repair genes via DNA methylation, inducing cancer stem cell expansion, and modulating the type of immune cells in the tumor microenvironment.
