Research Interest

I am a Distinguished University Professor in the Medical University of South Carolina’s (MUSC) Department of Medicine. My research focuses on the pathogenic mechanisms underlying fibrosis in systemic sclerosis (SSc), idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), and related fibrotic diseases. Our goal is to gain a better understanding of the pathogenesis of fibrosis in SSc, identify correlates of disease severity, and identify novel pro- and anti-fibrotic molecules. I have advanced discoveries from the bench to pre-clinical studies and one of my discoveries has been licensed and is currently being developed for clinical trials.
