Research Interest

My clinical practice is focused on pediatric oncology. I have interests in neuroblastoma, pediatric sarcomas and pediatric precision oncology. I am actively involved in clinical pediatric research in the Beat Childhood Cancer Research Consortium (BCC) where I am a member of the Executive Board and Scientific Committee, and in the Children’s Oncology Group (COG) where I am a member of the Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Diversity and Health Disparities and Neuroblastoma Committees. I serve as the Institutional Principal Investigator (PI) for COG and BCC clinical trials at my institution. As the Institutional PI, have been responsible for the conduct of more than 80 Biology, phase I, phase II, and phase III clinical trials at MUSC. I have designed and led several pediatric oncology trials mainly focused on neuroblastoma and pediatric precision medicine. In addition to clinical research, I am involved in translational and bench research. I have more than 15 years of experience in the field of bioactive sphingolipids and cancer. My current bench research focuses on sphingolipid and retinoid mediated signal transduction in pediatric cancers, particularly neuroblastoma and the function and regulation of the enzyme dihydroceramide desaturase (DEGS-1). The long-term goals of my research are to develop novel therapeutic strategies for pediatric malignancies.
